Step 01: Remove the Trucks to Replace Skateboard Grip Tape

Secondly, you can start loosening the old grip tape. Grab a hair dryer and heat the edge of the grip tape. Move the dryer back and forth for a few minutes. This softens the adhesive, making it easier to peel.

Then, you can use a razor blade to lift a corner of the grip tape. Slide the blade under the edge, working carefully to avoid scratching the deck. Once you’ve got a corner lifted, start peeling the tape back at a shallow angle (less than 90 degrees).

If the tape is hard to peel, heat it again with the hair dryer. This will loosen the adhesive more.

Step 03: Clean the Skateboard Deck

Now that the grip tape is off, you’ll notice some leftover adhesive or dirt on the deck. Take a damp cloth and wipe it clean. If there’s any stubborn residue then use sandpaper to smooth it out. Don’t worry if some adhesive is still there, it won’t affect the new grip tape.

Finally, It’s time to apply the new grip tape on your skateboard!

  • Align the Grip Tape on Your Skateboard: Hold the grip tape over the board. Make sure it covers the whole deck.
  • Stick It Down: Start at one end and press the tape onto the board. Work from the center outward to avoid air bubbles.
  • Pop Any Bubbles: Use a pin or razor blade to pop any small bubbles. Press the tape flat afterward.

Step 05: Trim and Sand the Edges of the Skateboard

Take your screwdriver and press it along the edges of the deck. This will create a clear outline in the grip tape, making it easier to cut. Next, use a razor blade to trim the excess tape along the outline. Hold the blade at a 45-degree angle and cut slowly to avoid jagged edges.

Now, grab a piece of leftover grip tape or sandpaper. Use it to sand down the edges of the grip tape where it meets the board. This helps the tape stick better and prevents peeling over time.

Step 06: Reattach the Trucks
